Formerly known as Saigon, Hochiminh city today is the bustling and vibrating economic center of the south. The city is bathed by many rivers, arroyos and canals, the biggest river being the Saigon River. The Port of Saigon, established in 1862, is accessible to ships weighing up to 30,000 tons, a rare advantage for an inland river port.
Over the past few centuries, Saigon was already a busy commercial center. Merchants from China, Japan and many European countries would sail upstream the Saigon River to reach the islet of Pho, a trading center. In 1874, Cho Lon merged with Saigon forming the largest city in the Indochina. Saigon was called the ''Pearl of the Far East'' and was an important trading center for Chinese, Japanese and Western merchants who travelled up the Saigon River.

When to go?
The climate is generally hot and humid. There are two distinctive seasons: the rainy season, from May to November, and the dry season, from December to April. The annual average temperature is 27ºC. The hottest month is April and the lowest is December. It is warm all year.
Go to southern Vietnam in winter for the best weather, avoiding the monsoon season (May to October). But be prepared for humid conditions throughout the year. The best month is January, when the weather is drier and temperatures hover in the high-80s. The weather in the Central Highlands northeast of Ho Chi Minh City is appreciably cooler, especially at night. By contrast, Muine Beach, Phu Quoc Island offer warm temperature around the year. -

Several airlines offer non - stop flights from Asian hubs airports like Singapore, Kuala Lumpur, Manila, Taipei, Hong Kong, Seoul, Tokyo, Narita and Bangkok to the Tan Son Nhat International Airport.
It's also possible to travel overland from Phnom Penh, Cambodia, to Ho Chi Minh City in a day via the Moc Bai/ Bavet border crossing; travelers' cafés in both cities sell bus tickets for the trip, which normally takes from six to eight hours. -

- Explore Saigon still called by many locals: Cathedral Notre Dame, Post office, city hall, Palace of Reunification, War Remnants Museum, China town, Ben Thanh market, Tay Son lacquer workshop. From Saigon, you also have a wide choice for your short trips.
- You also discover the famous tunnels of Cuchi (70 km from Saigon), Mekong Delta (1, 2 or 3 Days).
- If you'd like to explore Mekong Delta deeply, you can book a cruise for 2 days or longer on Song Xanh sampan, Mango Cruises, Mekong Eyes, Gecko Cruises, Dragon Cruises, Mekong Emotion, Le Cochinchine or Bassac Boats. These boats deserve inside journeys in Mekong Delta: walking, cycling, hiking a long the small paths connecting hamlets and villages or extensive rice fields from My Tho, Ben Tre, Cai Be, Vinh Long, Can Tho, Sa Dec, Chau Doc, Long Xuyen.
